KOREA'S LUNAR NEW YEAR

한국의 구정 설 문화 Welcome to Issues and Insiders. Today we delve into Seollal celebrations as Korea looks ahead to the lunar new year this weekend. For more I have Kwon Soa here in the studio. Soa welcome back. I also have Professor David Tizzard from Seoul Women's University with us. It's a pleasure to have you here. 1-1) Soa, for the sake of our viewers who may not be familiar with Korean culture, let's start with a few words on what a typical Seollal celebration looks like. {-Seollal is one of the two major national holidays in Korea, along with Chuseok, or the Korean version of thanksgiving in autumn. -Seol is when the lunar new year begins, and when everyone tells each other which literally means I wish you lots of fortune in the new year, or it's just a way to say happy new year here in Korea, (so we here it numerous times, also in the new year according to the Gregorian calendar) -Seollal this year falls on Jan. 22nd, a Sunday. -usually the holidays last 3 days: the day before New Year, Seollal or new year itself, and the day after. (as seol falls on Sunday, we get off until Tuesday) -what's done? Families get together -means a lot of traveling to hometowns -the tradition is that families and relatives gather at the " " = big house = eldest son's house, or oldest brother's house. -some families take turns in hosting the ceremony. - : bowing to parents, grandparents, (older generations) + + receive -also bow to ancestors, during an ancestral rite called : dishes, fruits, liquor served according to specific rules -lunar new year dishes: pan-fried , , rice cake, , etc. -the main dish: , or rice cake soup. Sliced circular rice cake in a broth, usually with slices of beef and egg and , and vegetable. -why do we eat this? It's to gain a year to your age, (like or seaweed soup on your bday) or to grant people good luck. (although this year will be remembered as the year we do not get older,. due to the adoption of the universal age system) -apart from eating, traditional games like , , are popular during the seol festivities} 1-2) And, Soa, I also believe there is a correct way to place your hands and your feet depending on your gender for the Sebae, right? 2) Professor Tizzard, you've been here in Korea for a while now. Is there a particular Seollal cultural custom that you find rather intriguing? 3) Soa, with consumer prices here still hovering on the 5-percent range, I hear the cost of Charye this year has risen to a record high. Do tell us more, and how are authorities planning to ease this burden on purse strings? {-research service Korea Price Information: the cost of preparing a table for a family of four, was estimated at 254,500 won, or roughly 206 usd. at traditional market, up 4.1% from last year -359,740 won or 291 dollars, when purchasing the items at large retailers, up 2.1% from last year. -although the on-year increase is larger at traditional markets, it costs 41.4% more to buy your essential items at retail stores than at traditional markets. -According to KPI, the rate of increase alone might not be extremely high, prices did hit an all-time high this year, again. -By item: prices of industrial products such as livestock, confectionary, processed foods such as flour, cooking oil up. -affected by Russia's war in Ukraine, global oil, grain, raw materials up. -But, prices of agricultural products such as fruits, nuts, and vegetables have fallen, thanks to increased production. Dried persimmons and jujube costs also decreased due to a rise in imports. - : spinach down, (fiddleheads?) up -government's efforts to ease financial burden: -Temporary customs clearance of imported goods that are high in demand during started on Jan. 9 to stabilize prices ahead of the holidays -the government also announced to supply an unprecedented 208,000 tons of 16 key lunar new year food items, provide discounts on agricultural, livestock, fisheries products worth 30 bil. won -just like last year, the anti-graft law (Kim Young-ran Act) to be temporarily eased for 30 days until Jan. 27 to raise the value of the Lunar New Year gift to 200,000 won. -Exemption of expressway tolls -reduction of electricity and gas bills} 4) Professor Tizzard, speaking within your capacity as a scholar, what do you suppose are the broader implications of these Seollal practices including those of Charye and Sebae? 5) Meanwhile, Soa, with regard to Charye, late last year, ahead of the Chuseok holiday, one scholar caused quite a bit of a sensation by suggesting that our current Charye table was way too extravagant. First then, what exactly was his suggestion, and why did it cause much debate... #Holiday #Seollal #Arirang_News 📣 Facebook :   / arirangtvnews   📣 Twitter :   / arirangtvnews   📣 Homepage : https://v2.arirang.com/ 2023-01-16, 14:30 (KST)
