GROWING POPULARITY OF KOREAN LITERATURE

한국 문학 번역 러시 Welcome to Issues and Insiders. Today we explore the art of translating Korean literature into English amid a growing appetite for Korean works on the international market. For more I have Anton Hur the translator who was double long-listed and shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize. Anton it's a pleasure. I also have Professor Kevin Smith at the University of California Berkeley joining this session virtually. Professor Smith it's good to have you with us. 1) Professor Smith, let's start with some tangible verification about the actual popularity of Korean literature overseas in recent years. 2) Anton, as a literary translator yourself, would you say the demand for English translations of Korean literary works has indeed been growing in recent years? And if so, how do you explain this demand? 3) And Professor Smith, what do you believe is fueling the global interest in Korean literature? 4) Anton, some pundits claim the popularity is, in part, being driven by a shift in tone adopted by younger Korean novelists who choose to touch upon concerns that are relatively universal but with personal twists. What are your thoughts? 5) Professor Smith, on topic of translation now, surely there are Korean words that do not have English translations that do them justice, and hence the recent inclusion of some Korean diction into the Oxford English Dictionary. That being said, what are your translation suggestions for the Korean words "aegyo" , "han" , and "jeong" , which, in my opinion, are some of the toughest to translate. 6-1) Anton, do you care to share your suggestions? And also, for "호칭" or "honorifics", if you will, like "오빠", "형" and so forth. 6-2) Anton, there are some Korean statements that can be beautifully brief and yet contain comprehensive content. Understandably, their English translations can become long and verbose. How do you deal with this dilemma? 7) Anton, do you think is translation all about accuracy and faithfulness to the given text? Or does the work involve something more? 8) Professor Smith, some critics insist that in the process of translation some information is bound to be lost. What are your thoughts? And is there a way to prevent or better address this potential loss? 9) Now Anton, a simple layperson, like me, would assume that to ensure the best translation of any work of literature, the author and the translator would need to spend quite a bit of time together discussing the work. But, in one interview, you said, and I "For me, the norm is to not really know my authors." Why? 10-1) Professor Smith, how important is the role of translators to ensuring a greater presence of Korean literature of the global market? 10-2) Anton, essentially the task of sharing the works of Korean authors with audiences beyond borders requires the presence of equally gifted translators. What can be done to better support related efforts? 11) Anton, for English-language readers who are seeking to indulge in Korean literature for the first time, what book do you recommend and why? 12) And Professor Smith, are there any works that you would choose to recommend? All right. #Literature #Translation #Arirang_News 📣 Facebook :   / arirangtvnews   📣 Twitter :   / arirangtvnews   📣 Homepage : https://v2.arirang.com/ 2023-01-13, 14:30 (KST)
