The gate has different names in each language: In Hebrew – Sha'ar Shechem (Nablus Gate) in Arabic Ba'ab Al Amud (The gate of the pillar) In the early Roman period during the 2nd century CE, Emperor Hadrian erected a victory arch and placed a pillar and statue in the center of the Plaza in front of the arch. The pillar acted as the zero mark for calculating the distance from Jerusalem to the rest of the towns of the region. The Roman arch can be seen in the lower level, n the left side f the gate. Jerusalem's Old City walls were renovated by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman in the years 1536-1538. Damascus Gate was built on the exact location of an ancient gate, the historic gate that led north – to Damascus. Suleiman's engineers planned a fortified gate to defend the vulnerable northern entrance. Two towers protect the entrance from both sides, and the entrance itself has a 90-degree turn to force the intruders to expose their flank. Damascus Gate faces the East Jerusalem business center and serves mainly the Arab community of the city. Within the gate, we will experience a vibrant marketplace where vendors sell fresh food products. The tour will also take us to a hidden secret very close to the gate – Al Jebrini's Tahini factory. The Jebrinis have been making Tahini for 150 years in the traditional way using Basalt grinding stone wheels to crush the sesame seeds into Tahini.
