Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS): A Deadly Complication Explained

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a clinical condition that is characterized by respiratory failure. ARDS can be caused by sepsis, COVID infection, pneumonia, chest trauma, generalized trauma, aspiration of gastric contents, TRALI (transfusion related acute lung injury), and more. No matter the cause, ARDS has characteristics: pulmonary edema, fibrotic changes in the lungs (formation of a hyaline membrane), and pulmonary hypertension. The hallmark sign of ARDS is hypoxemia despite increasing FiO2. Treatment of ARDS focuses on treating the underlying cause and increasing oxygenation, as well as hemodynamics stability. Prone positioning is a strategy that can be helpful to increase oxygenation. Despite treatment, however, the mortality of ARDS is 50%.
