I’m Diane O’Connell, book development expert and founder of Write to Sell Your Book. Welcome to my video series: Five Secrets to Writing a Bestselling Novel. In this video I’m going to share the first secret, which is: before you start writing, develop your novel’s vision. As a published author and former editor at Random House, I’ve seen with the writers I’ve worked with, the most important step an author can take to write a gripping novel, is to define what their book is about before they start writing. Too many authors make the critical mistake of skipping this step. They may have a thrilling plot or compelling characters, but they haven’t decided what they want to say in their book. I’m not talking about plot or character – I’m talking about something deeper: the ideas or themes you want to explore, such as a story of love and loss or a big “what if” question, such as what if someone developed a cure to end all disease? This is your vision — and it’s the most important step in writing your novel. If you don’t have a clear vision, your novel could meander, leaving the reader without a satisfying conclusion. To establish your novel’s vision follow these 3 Steps: Step one is to ask, “Why?” Why were you drawn to your story? What themes or conflicts fascinate you most about it? Why would a reader find this story entertaining? The next step is to Think Big. Go to extremes! Think life and death, good and evil. Find a problem complex and deep enough to sink your teeth into. Even everyday problems can be made extraordinary. Rachel Joyce’s bestselling novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, is about the most ordinary of characters, doing something very simple: walking to deliver a letter. Yet the stakes for Harold couldn’t be higher: a lifetime of regret versus the chance for redemption. The final step is to write the flap copy. That’s the copy on the back of the book that makes you want to buy it. When you write this, you’ll know immediately if your vision is clear and big enough for your novel. Keep it short – 250 words max. This will force you to cut to the core of novel’s vision. If you define the vision for your novel, you’ll write a book with real impact and your writing decisions will be easier along the way. Be sure to check out my next video, where I share Secret #2: Creating memorable characters. I’m Diane O’Connell. Thanks for joining me. See you in the next video.
