Even if your story is unique and your writing is fresh, if you don't create original, multidimensional characters, you can sabotage your chances at a publishing deal. I’m Diane O’Connell, book development expert and founder of Write to Sell Your Book. Welcome back to my video series: Five Secrets to Writing a Bestselling Novel. In my last video, we talked about defining your novel’s big vision. Once you’ve done this, you’re ready for the next step: creating memorable characters. During my years in publishing and as an editor at Random House, I’ve read many manuscripts that were not engaging. The author created a vivid story or an original premise, but the characters were not compelling. If you don’t create original, multi-dimensional characters, you’ll sabotage your chances for a publishing deal. It’s essential to understand your characters inside and out before you write your scenes. If you address these 4 key elements, you’ll ensure your characters are true to life, multi-dimensional, and memorable. First, ask, “Who is this person?” What are his biggest strengths and weaknesses? What past mistakes does he regret? What is he hiding? What is his Dream vs. the Reality he now finds himself in? The second character element is: How did this character get here? A character’s history colors how he views the present situation and how he reacts to the twists and turns of your novel. The third element is: What does my character want? What your character wants is what determines the events in your novel. And it’s the series of events that drive the story forward and form the plot. Once you know what your character wants, you need to dig deeper to uncover the final — and most important character element: What does my character need? The character’s need is the deeper psychological reason he wants what he wants. This is the greater journey your character is on — the thing he needs to overcome internally. Ultimately, this need will motivate his actions, and his actions will drive the plot. Once you thoroughly discover the 4 key elements of each character, you’re ready to start crafting the structure of your novel. I’ll explore how to build a structure that creates a page turner in my next video. I’m Diane O’Connell. Thanks for joining me. See you in the next video.
