(30 Oct 2019) Armenians have praised the US House of Representatives for recognising the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks a century ago as genocide. "We are thankful", said a student, Anush, as she visited the Armenian Genocide memorial in the capital Yerevan. Another student, Khachatur , said he appreciated the step that the US lawmakers had taken. Historians estimate that up to one and a half million Armenians were killed around World War I, and many scholars see it as the 20th century's first genocide. But Turkey continues to dispute this description, saying the toll has been exaggerated. Armenian lawmaker Ruben Rubinyan criticised Turkey for continuing to deny that it was genocide. He said Tukey could either remain the "lone deniers" or they could face up to their history.
