Bonneville 'Hard To Love' Official Music Video

‘Hard To Love’ is the second single release from the Southern Retro Soul band, Bonneville’s debut classic funk, rock, soul, R&B self-titled album, ‘Bonneville,’ to be released August 24th, 2022. This compilation of work reflects their Southern artistic roots, passion to preserve music legacy of this era, and tireless effort to reignite the appreciation and celebration of classic soul grooves through their own unique blend of styles. Both men recall the time of hand-crafted, “analogue” music, sung from the soul. It’s a beautifully imperfect sound that makes you want to go along for the ride. Atlanta based friends, lead vocalist/co-songwriter Wes McGee and guitarist/co-songwriter Jeff Hayashi contribute to Bonneville’s instantly recognizable style and sound - fun, funky, raw, deep, greasy, swampy, classic soul grooves with a R&B, funk, blues edge. After the strong reception of their first debut single, ‘Hard To Love’ continues this momentum with another fun, funky, groovy, danceable, track that pays homage to the musicians and writers of the early days of funk, soul, and classic R&B. Not only is this an energetic, happy, feel good song with inspired melodies of the ‘60s era Do Wop, Bonneville’s unique style puts the exclamation point on the ‘playful’ soul element of this track. With ‘Hard To Love,’ fans of Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Clarence Carter, are in for an unexpected surprise. Hayashi shares, “when we set out to make this song, we knew we wanted a tight pocket groove and syncopated instrumentation, lots of horns, and gospel choir style backing vocals. The horns have a way of bringing up the energy of the track and is one of the signature elements of Bonneville’s sound. We also knew that we had to maintain a dichotomy between a happy upbeat vibe musically combined with a challenging and difficult lyrical expression that aligns to the narrative of the song. The narrative of ‘Hard To Love’ centers on the challenge of being a family man that is a music maker and entertainer; acknowledging the difficulties of maintaining a personal family life while needing to maintain a public persona.” “‘Hard To Love’ was inspired by the film ‘Everyone Stares,’ a documentary based on stock footage acquired of the formation of ‘The Police’ all the way through their rise to stardom, landing the spot as a #1 rock band of the ‘80s. As the band reaches superstardom, they have aged and also become family men. It made me wonder what it was like for the wives and children who had to sacrifice precious family time due to their fathers' unique job. It must have been trying on the families and at times, made the men ‘Hard to Love.’ Not hard to love in that they aren't good men, but ‘hard’ as in challenging, from a lifestyle perspective. We needed to depict the challenge of the heartache connected with this lifestyle, but do it in an upbeat groove which establishes a bit of irony.” McGee adds, “this is about the people who need to roam about with only a self focused mentality. Though the song makes clear this lifestyle choice, it also provides the partner (the one at home) an opening to decide if they are to take part or walk away.” McGee further elaborates, “due to the dichotomy that we had to establish to make this an upbeat, danceable track, while maintaining the conflicted mood of the narrative, I leaned into a heart-felt soulful sound. Energetically, I was trying to vocally project a man trying to absolve himself from his nature. Even after hearing the basics laid out in the studio, it still seemed a little sleepy. So, I pumped up the earnestness of the tone.” Bonneville invited fellow Southerner and Mississippi-born, GRAMMY®-recognized producer, Starita, known for pushing the envelope of sonic ranges and unique genre-blending styles (recognized for his work with Childish Gambino, A Tribe Called Quest, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Los Amigos Invisibles), to capture and produce the quintessential ‘Muscle Shoals Soul/R&B’ sound. For this project, they were channeling the energy and spirit of the legends – Aretha Franklin, Clarence Carter, Wilson Pickett, Candi Staton, Etta James – who came before them to this small town to cut music “...from the heart, not from the chart,” to quote the late Rick Hall, Founder of FAME Recording Studios. Starita reflects, “While we were looking to pay homage to the Muscle Shoals sound and artists that came before us, I was always pushing to find new territory and the outer edges of production. With this tune, I just had to surrender to the sound the song was calling for.” “When fans hear this track for the first time, I hope that it makes their heads bop and hips shake!” Hayashi concludes. Bonneville will be performing a live showcase in Muscle Shoals, AL, on September 21st, 2022, co-hosted by FAME Recording Studios. Proceeds from this performance will be donated to the Colbert County FAME Girls’ Ranch, a nonprofit 501C charity and FAME Recording Studios Foundation.
