Boogeyman - Official Music Video

‘Boogeyman’ is the second single from southern retro soul band Bonneville’s second album, ‘Flying Machine,’ to be released on Tuesday, October 31st, 2023. Bonneville is a band that has carved out a reputation for its retro-soul, funky R&B sound. Their compilation of work reflects their Southern artistic roots, passion to preserve music legacy of this era, and tireless effort to reignite the appreciation and celebration of classic soul grooves through their own unique blend of styles. ‘Boogeyman’ is a powerful, poignant, funky, and all around good-time tune echoing quintessential inner city soul music of the early 70’s, wrapped around an empathic and empowering message for humanity without being preachy. Listeners are immediately struck by the song’s hard-hitting energy - from the huge intro, to the deep groove in the verses, to the soaring bridge - and are taken on a sonic and rhythmic ride. Though ‘Flying Machine’ has a neo-soul, post disco energy, the vibe of ‘Boogeyman’ is on point with the other tracks on the album while representing the progression of the Bonneville sound. “This track leans a little more old school than the others,” guitarist and band member Jeff Hayashi explains, “I really wanted to incorporate strings and capture that late 70's east coast R&B movie sound that the crime dramas of the era made famous. This vibe is especially recognizable in the song's bridge.” His bandmate and lead vocalist, Wes McGee, infused the tune with an early 70’s soul sound, similar to Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway and Randy Crawford (‘Street Life’). “It’s one of my favorite songs to sing. I feel this style fits best with my voice,” McGee says. Listeners will also hear the influence of other funk, soul, and 70’s R&B artists such as Bobby Womack, The Spinners, Sly and the Family Stone, and Tower of Power in this track. ‘Boogeyman’ is about mainstream media and social media brainwashing. The concept for the song was born out of a conversation between Hayashi and McGee. “Jeff and I were speaking about how negative the news and current events have made us feel. It seemed people were reacting in a very fear-based way and that a lot of it, including misinformation, was creating division amongst the population and entrancing people to live in fear,” McGee says. “We wanted to inspire people to free themselves from exploitation and open their eyes to look around at reality, as well as plead with them to get their faces out of their devices and into their lives.” Hayashi adds, “Overall I hope this is a feel-good track, one you can dance to and one that creates awareness of what is important in life.” In the studio, Bonneville, along with GRAMMY®-recognized producer, @staritamusic focused on making arrangement tweaks to ‘Boogeyman.’ Starita envisioned adding a sense of darkness and urgency while still keeping the track fun and groovy. “I spent some time with the arrangement moving pieces and parts around to make sure the song kept moving and hitting hard. The intro comes in strong and I wanted it to sound like a train coming with harmonica. This was what I was most excited to implement: harmonica with a huge horn section. The riff in the tune is massive. So, my goal was to see how big we could make it,” Starita explains. To accomplish this, Starita enlisted one of the most talented and famous harmonica players in the industry, Mickey Raphael. “Mickey is most known for being in Willie Nelson's band since 1973 along with Chris Stapleton, Bob Dylan, Dave Mathews, Merle Haggard and a slew of other legendary artists. He really added the depth and mood we were looking for in the tune,” Starita says. “The message in this song is deep and urgent. When delivering a message with so much depth, it's sometimes important to wrap it in a much more approachable production that’s not only fun to listen to but also doesn’t drag down the overall mood. We pulled out all the stops including bringing in Will McFarlane to do his signature guitar licks that bob and weave around the vocals. Will is best known for being Bonnie Raitt's guitar player for many years along with being a part of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section playing on records for Etta James, Bobby Blue Bland, Little Milton, and Johnny Taylor. Starita adds, “I hope people get the message that the narratives they are being fed through mainstream media and social media should be questioned. Hopefully, it encourages people to think more independently.” Production team - Jeff Hayashi, songwriter, guitar, co-producer; Wes McGee, songwriter, lead vocals; Mickey Raphael, harmonica; Andy Dixon, bass; Will McFarlane, guitar; Brad Kuhn, keys; Justin Holder, drums; Brad Guin, Vincent Cieslielski, Sarah Morrow, horns; Starita, producer; Wes Sheffield, recording engineer, mix engineer.
