Our brain on stories - Interview with Kendall Haven

Kendall Haven is without exaggeration a human legend in the world of applied storytelling, he has studied the relations between our brain and stories for more than 30 years and was among the creators of the National Storytelling Association. His books "Story Proof" and "Story Smart" revolutionized our understanding the connection between stories and our brain. We discussed how our brain reacts to the stories, is there a difference between positive and negative stories and what are they for, how to make sure our listeners reach the conclusion we want through working with the story itself, and much more. You can connect with Kendall here: http://www.kendallhaven.com/ Key interview topics: 01:43 - As a warm-up, I asked Kendall to share how can we control the meaning that our audience gets after the story if everyone perceives the story with their own unique brain and unique set of experiences. 03:13 - Kendall talked about two questions (the second at 06:11) underlying story research, told us what happens in our brains when we start listening to a story, and why is it so important to manipulate the elements of the story that form meanings (05:25). 08:07 - A very cool trick about the work of our brain and the order in which heroes appear in history. 10:14 - Kendall talked about the first three components that help us draw meaning from stories: hero, goal and motive. 14:02 - The next three components are risk and danger, the hero's actions (16:23), the last obstacle on the way to the goal (17:25) and the decisive character (17:45). 20:18 - Finally, the conclusion of the story and two components that help us form the meaning at the end. 22:36 - Asked Kendall if there should be a formal lesson in a story or moral to make our brain react better to a story, here's what he said. 29:16 - Kendall elaborated on the decisive character that influences the ending of the story and clarified what to do with this character in stories with internal conflict (32:16). 35:45 - Kendall talked about how the brain is affected by stories with negative and positive ending. 42:30 - I asked Kendall to talk about two ways to get the story working: "find a story and then understand it's meaning OR determine what meaning you want to convey and then find the right story to convey it. Here's what Kendall said about it. 49:17 - Here's an advice from Kendall for everyone who want to start using stories to get new results. 52:41 - I asked Kendall to finish the phrase: "It takes one thing to get from good story to great story and it is...".
