The Korean Cable TV Started the World's First Ever UHD Cable TV Broadcasting Services

The KCTA rolled out the world's first commercial UHD cable TV programs that have four times as many pixels as in HD as well as exceptional sound quality. The association, headed by Mr. Yang Hwee-boo, launched the service on the occasion of Declaration of Commercial UHD Cable Service, a session of KCTA 2014 Cable TV Show held at the Jeju International Convention Center on April 10. The Korean cable industry has been so far working on the commercialization of UHD service by way of establishing UHD designated channel UMAX through HomeChoice, a company that deals with UHD contents supply, UMAX management and UHD VOD services. For starters, the industry will provide real time broadcasting and commercial on-demand UHD programs (in 10 bits at 60 fps) through a software-based set top box technology in partnership with Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. With the development of UHD set top box sometime in the second half of this year, it is going to make efforts to obtain more subscribers. In a press conference held prior to the event, President Yang of the association said, "The initiation of commercial UHD broadcasting services means that it is taking a leading role in building a new ecosystem for a future growth engine in the visual industry."
