Pipeloops Virtual Organ Concert #1 with Anton Doornhein

This is the first concert in our series of virtual organ concerts performed by various organists on Hauptwerk organs using sample sets produced by Pipeloops. Today's artist: Anton Doornhein http://www.antondoornhein.nl/ Anton Doornhein studied organ at the Rotterdam Conservatory with Jet Dubbeldam achieving diplomas as Teaching Musician and Performing Musician. After his training he attended courses by, among others, Albert de Klerk and Kamiel d'Hooghe, followed by interpretation lessons by Marie Louise Langlais-Jaquet at the "Conservatoire International de Musique" in Paris, which were crowned with a unanimous award of the Grand Prix. In 1985 he won the National Organ Festival at Leyden in the category romantic music, and in 1988 he was winner at the International Organ Festival at Nijmegen. He was also one of the finalists at the International Bach Festival 1995 in the Sint Bavo Church in Haarlem. For his services to French organ culture, in 1997 he was awarded the Bronze Medal, and in 2004 with the Silver Medal of Arts, Sciences et Lettres. In 2001 he won three prizes at the Cesar Franck Organ Festival in the Sint Bavo Cathedral in Haarlem: the second prize, the audience prize and the Charles Tournemire prize. Anton Doornhein is organist of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Dominicus in Rotterdam. He recorded several CDs from the St. Agatha church in Lisse, “Grote kerk” in Beverwijk, the Moses and Aäron church in Amsterdam, and the Katarina church in Stockholm. In 2007 he recorded the complete organ works of Joseph Jongen performing in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Kerk in Laken (Belgium) and in the Marienbasilika of Kevelaer (Germany). Today's concert is performed on the sample set of the great Walcker organ in the St. Antonius church in Papenburg, Germany. This 99 stop german romantic organ had originally been built for the Hans-Sachs-Haus in Gelsenkirchen, Germany in 1927 and was one of the largest and most important concert hall organs in Germany at that time. https://www.pipeloops.com/product_inf... Program: Louis Vierne: From Symphonie nr 2 : Allegro The Allegro begins with a punctuated rhythm and is quite impressive. It is based on two themes. With its melodic character, the second theme stands in sharp contrast to the first theme. Both themes alternate. In the further course, the movement comes to a standstill above a sustained pedal tone. Then, above the same pedal tone, a movement develops in 1/32 notes, which leads to a climax by means of a long trill. The two themes return once more, and finally are connected in a coda. Louis Vierne: From Triptique : Style pour un enfant défunt The “Style pour un enfant défunt” is the third part of the Triptique and is a memory of Vierne’s dear boyfriend Jean de Brancion Jehan Alain: Petite pièce The Petite Pièce from Jehan Alain has been composed in 1932. It is an introvert piece of music played with the flues, strings in the beginning and ending, and in the middle part two different reeds, Oboe and Rankett (from the Walcker-organ) Jehan Alain: Variations sur Lucis Creator The Variations sur Lucis Creator from Jehan Alain is based on a gregorian chant and it is composed in the same year as the Petite Pièce, 1932. It is a Choral (with a 4’ in pedal) followed by two variations Charles Tournemire: From L'Orgue Mystique nr. 35 In Assumptione B.M.V. - Paraphrase – Carillon This piece is one of the most dazzling finales Touremire has written. The work is constructed as a fabric of two Marian chants: the hymn "Ave Maris Stella" and the antiphon "Salve Regina." The work consists of three parts, in which both melodies are artfully woven together. In general, the melody of Ave Maris Stella is played on the manuals and that of the Salve Regina on the pedals. Part I is a solid, robust and playful piece of music, while part II is dance-like and radiates thoughtfulness. The tingling of the carillon is recognizable from all kinds of runs, the end evaporates like a morendo. The third movement uses the melody of the first movement as a repetition or inclusion, but much stronger and more massive. Joseph Jongen: Fugue dans le style de J.S. Bach Joseph Jongen had great admiration for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. His organ works were frequently played at his recitals. As a student of fugue and composition at the conservatory he had learned in detail how a Baroque fugue should be constructed, which he showed in the present work. Joseph Jongen: Priere The prière of Joseph Jongen is a profound piece of music, probably influenced by the music of Richard Wagner. It starts with the foundations 8 with the Gamba and Celeste in the ending. Joseph Jongen: Sonata Eroica The Sonata Eroïca is one of Jongen’s most famous organworks. It is also his most original, dramatic and monumental organ composition. Organists interested in performing for this series please contact pipeloops at pipeloops dot com for details.
