Managing respiratory failure is something that you will do all the time. In this lesson I talk about what exactly respiratory failure is and how we classify it based on Type 1 Hypoxemic and Type 2 Hypercapnic, as well as covering the many different causes within 4 major groups from impaired ventilation (hypoventilation), impaired gas exchange, airway obstruction, and ventilation perfusion mismatch. From there we review over the signs and symptoms for patients in respiratory failure as well as the different diagnostic tests we can see.
