Car used by militants to attack the air base STORYLINE : India's security forces say they foiled a suicide attack by Islamic militants at an air force base in Kashmir on Monday. Four militants, who tried to drive into the Awantipora air base in a car, were killed by airport security guards after a 20-minute gunbattle. This is the first time that a high-security strategic defence installation has been attacked by the Islamic separatists in Kashmir. Journalists who reached the spot after the attack witnessed a blast caused by the explosives left behind by the suicide squad of militants. Some arms and ammunition were found in the car used by the militants. The army spokesman said the militants opened fire when the car in which the militants were traveling was stopped at the gate by an unarmed guard. Hearing the sound of the gunshots, Border Security Force policemen posted near the gate returned the fire, killing all four militants. The air base, 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir state, suffered no major damage and was cordoned off. The Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyaba claimed responsibility for the attack.
