What has been the impact of recent conflicts on global peacefulness—and what could be the impact of future conflicts if not avoided today? What can data-driven analysis of peace tell us about the role and success of U.S. Government and civil society peacebuilding efforts, and what should these efforts prioritize over the coming years and months? On June 29, 2023, AfP and the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) explored key findings from IEP’s 2023 Global Peace Index. The conversation featured a lineup of peace and security experts to discuss the report’s implications from a foreign policy and civil society perspective. It presents the most comprehensive data-driven analysis to-date on trends in peace, its economic value, and how to develop peaceful societies. The GPI covers 163 countries comprising 99.7 % of the world’s population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources. It also measures the state of peace across three domains: the level of societal safety and security; the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict; and the degree of militarization.
