SLAVIC: BULGARIAN & BANAT BULGARIAN

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Bulgarian (български език, Bǎlgarski ezik) is a South Slavic language spoken primarily in Bulgaria, where it is the official language, with smaller communities in neighboring countries and among the Bulgarian diaspora worldwide. It is closely related to Macedonian and shares similarities with Serbian and other Balkan languages. Bulgarian is unique among Slavic languages for its lack of grammatical cases (except for vestiges in pronouns) and its use of a definite article, which is attached as a suffix to the noun. It is written in the Cyrillic script and has been influenced by Greek, Turkish, and Russian due to historical and cultural interactions. As one of the oldest written Slavic languages, Bulgarian has a rich literary tradition dating back to the 9th century with Old Church Slavonic. Today, it remains a vibrant language used in literature, media, and everyday life across Bulgaria and beyond. Banat Bulgarian is a South Slavic language variety spoken by the Banat Bulgarians in Romania and Serbia (and Bulgaria, some migrated back during the late 19th/early to mid-20th centuries), which achieved the status of a literary microlanguage due to its early adoption of the Latin alphabet. Rooted in the Southwestern Rhodope dialect brought by the Paulician Bulgarians and influenced by Northwestern Bulgarian elements from the Chiprovtsian dialect as well as central northern dialects of the Svishtov-Belene area, Banat Bulgarian also reflects Croatian linguistic influences, especially in early religious texts. The Catholic Church played a crucial role in preserving the language, with Franciscans and Jesuits (I'm not sure they were involved) establishing schools and promoting education in the native tongue, fostering language maintenance amid Banat’s multi-ethnic and multi-confessional environment of the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite the decline in secular usage, Banat Bulgarian continues to be maintained within church-related contexts, supported by a simplified Latin-based alphabet that has been standardized in modern publications. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
