or; THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING (with photo of my shocked visage, mouth agape) Just showing off some no-input mixing with crocodile cables. For far too long I have had a bag of bad phone plugs, and this idea, rattling around. Too long. Now that I tried it I realised it was fantastic, even better than I thought. It beats disappointment but damn I should DO things and not just have ideas that I don’t even begin to try out irl. The audio is taken from the left and right outputs and were recorded straight into the camera. The sound is completely untreated, except for a narrowing of the stereo image to maybe 60%. Instead of patching a no-input mixer with regular patch cables, you can connect phone plugs (6.35mm plugs) with the strain relief unscrewed. Then you connect ins and outs with crocodile cables (or alligator cables as some people call them). Use TRS plugs, not mono ones. Now you can: split signals easily patch into the out-of-phase input (ring/cold) patch into the mic (XLR) inputs (much more gain than the line ins, and different bass roll-off) send different signals into hot (tip) or cold (ring) inputs – differential amplifier chaos send different signals into a channel’s mic and line inputs simultaneously (signal sent to line will dominate) short inputs together for extra chaotic opamp-fighting-sounds (should be harmless, most mixers’ outputs have output current limiting resistors) easily access both left and right outputs on the headphone outs (* you can also play with touch; I plan to explore that further at some point) Especially the out-of-phase inputs and dead-short mixing on inputs gives a lot of extra chaos that is hard to achieve with regular phone plug no-input mixing. Of course, you can include pedals and other stuff to this, as usual with no-input. I’m a bit of a purist and don’t tend to do that so much. 🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊
