Charles Joguet, 2008 Les Varennes du Grand Clos, Chinon, Loire Valley, France | Cab Franc Chronicles

Cab Franc Chronicles - Your source for all things Cabernet Franc! -------------------- Analysis and commentary of the Charles Joguet, 2008 Les Varennes du Grand Clos, Chinon, Loire Valley, France Charles Joguet has two top vineyards that are considered their "home vineyards" where the estate was established in the commune of Sazilly on the left bank of the Vienne River in Chinon. These are Les Varennes du Grand Clos and Clos de la Dioterie. Purchased by Charles in 1962, Les Varennes du Grand Cru is an extension of the Clos de la Dioterie, on a gentle north-facing slope. It was partially replanted between 1962 and 1976, and a block still remains that was planted in the 1920s. The bedrock here is the Lower Turonian tuffeau chalk. This is the oldest of the tuffeaux chalk, and the Middle and Upper Turonian tuffeaux chalks are generally layered on top in different parts of the appellation. The Lower Turonian tuffeau is an argillaceous chalk. This chalk has a slightly higher clay content in it (similar-ish to marl) and also has silica minerals and a small percentage of iron oxide minerals in it as well. The topsoil varies across the vineyard, with more clay towards the top and more gravelly soils towards the bottom of the slope. The 2008 was a challenging vintage, but turned out a very good one in the end. There was frost, flowering was interrupted by rainfall and cool temperatures. The summer was cooler and wetter than average. The vintage was saved by a warm, dry September. Yields were down, and harvest was later than average, but the quality was very good overall. From a winemaking perspective, this was 100% hand-harvested and destemmed fruit. There was a 10 day cold soak in advance of alcoholic fermentation. The wine was on skins for 4 weeks total. It was aged in neutral French oak barrels. -------------------- Website coming later in 2022 with a full write up and tons more content.
