Research is an important step in your career journey. In this video, Career Services will review three ways to conduct career research and how your research can help you determine which of your career interests may be the best fit for you. Video transcript: Hi everyone, my name is Malie Teng and I am a team member with Career Services. Welcome to the Career Services Videos. In this video, I will be talking to you about Career Research and how this process can help you explore your career options. Career research is an important part of the 'Be Career Ready Cycle'. It can help you make well informed decisions that meet your personal criteria based on information you have gathered about your interests, values, and skills. It will help you find the best ‘fit’ when it comes to your career options. There are three ways that you can conduct Career Research. These include: online, through people, and through experience. Online research can help you explore and identify many different organizations, companies, departments, and job titles. Some of these might be new options that you have never learned about. There are many different online resources that can help you get started. For example, Job Bank, Charity Village, Indeed, Talent Egg and Volunteer Ottawa, just to name a few. From conducting online research, you may also want to identify and reach out to people who are in the industry or profession that you are interested in learning more about. Research through people allows you to expand your professional network, gather insight and information, as well as valuable advice. Research through people can be done through networking, conferences, career fairs, workshops, LinkedIn, and information interviews. These interactions can be planned or unplanned and formal or informal. Finally, Career Research can also be conducted through experience. This type of Career Research helps you gather information while also building on your skills, experiences, and connections. There are many ways to research through experience, for example, you can volunteer, join social clubs, participate in Co-op, placements or internships, job shadow, or find summer or part-time employment. Career research can be a very helpful tool when exploring career options. Now that we have gone some of the ways to conduct career research, what are some things you can start now to help you explore your career options? These might be reviewing an organizations website, reaching out to people in your network, or applying for a summer internship. Whatever your next steps might be, remember that we are here to help and support you!
