If you ever wondered how moderate rock can possibly be, "tourette's" is an answer. It can be this moderate, that's how. The song debuted in Nirvana's live set at Reading festival in August 1992. Kurt introduced it as "The Eagle Has Landed" while Krist was joking on how bootleggers should put this song out themselves. And the next thing you know, that's exactly what they did, so "The Eagle Has Landed" has become a mislabel. This performance was later included in "From The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah". First studio attempts were made in the following autumn and resulted in an instrumental track recorded by Jack Endino. This take can be found on the 2013 deluxe edition of "In Utero". In February 1993, Nirvana and Steve Albini recorded the final album version of "tourette's". Unlike the majority of "In Utero" songs, this one wasn't recorded by Kurt, Krist, and Dave playing together as a band: they did drums separately for "tourette's" and "Very Ape". Working titles were "Punk Rock" and "New Poopie". The final title refers to Tourette's syndrome – a mental disease that, among other nasty symptoms, makes you scream obscenities against your will. And Kurt's delivery sounds like that. Official lyrics support the conception and go like: "Cufk, Tish, Sips". Also, you can find several interpretations of what Kurt is exactly singing on the record.
