Updated: 11/2020 Kate KcKinnon was a student at Columbia University. I chanced by with camera in hand and she agreed to be interviewed as part of an insert to go along with my film, a fictional story about homelessness called "The Jones Movie" (on youtube under my name jonathan Slon) Kate Mckinnon had not yet become the famous, talented and brilliant actor on SNL. Some viewers have speculated that she was doing a "bit", a comic act. I don't think she was "playing a character" anymore that any one is when a camera is turned on and running. I am very grateful to her for agreeing to answer difficult and personal questions. I'm not a journalist, I'm a filmmaker. Some viewers have said that her voice or perhaps manner seems odd to them, and I agree with them. specifically the words "college" and the word "fruit". As a filmmaker, little quirks in human behavior are interesting because they can be cut into a scene as a juxtaposition to something completely different. That doesn't make the person odd though. We all can sound odd depending on how we feel on a given day, and how a filmmaker might use our words. All theatre and film is in one form or another manipulation. It is no longer reality once we've gotten hold of it! Another student complained, "...there are people in other countries who make a dollar a day, and these homeless people in New York are raking in five and ten times that amount..." Sounds good until you do the math, 5X1=5. 10X1=10 Five dollars, even ten dollars are hardly what I would call "raking it in". It's funny! To be fair, when you stick a camera in someone's face it's a little intimidating and we all run the risk of sounding a little odd given half a chance. BTW,. the original film "keeping up with jones" with Kate McKinnon is available in dvd form only. contact me if you want a copy. Jonathan Slon. thanks for watching!
