At first glance there doesn’t seem to be much of a system to this, but once you start to take a closer look and pay attention to repetition, you start to see that these chapters have actually been arranged in a very intentional and beautiful way. A Creation: first beginning, divine blessing (1:1-2:3) B Sin of Adam: nakedness, seeing/covering, curse (2:4-3:24) C No descendants of murdered younger, righteous son Abel (4:1-16) D Descendants of sinful son Cain (4:17-26) E Descendants of chosen son Seth: 10 generations (5:1-32) F Sin leading to judgment: sons of God (6:1-4) G Brief introduction to Noah: 3 sons (6:5-8) A’ Flood: reversal of creation, new beginning, divine blessing (6:9-9:19) B’ Sin of Noah: nakedness, seeing/covering nakedness, curse (9:20-29) C’ Descendants of younger, righteous son Japheth (10:1-5) D’ Descendants of sinful son Ham (10:6-20) E’ Descendants of chosen son Shem: 10 generations (10:21-32; 11:10-26) F’ Sin leading to judgment: tower of Babel (11:1-9) G’ Brief introduction to Terah: 3 sons (11:27-32) Isn’t that fascinating? And beautiful? Where at first glance it seemed that just had a bunch of stories and genealogies, now we can see that the author has very intentionally organized these first eleven chapter into two parallel panels, the first one running from creation to the flood and the second one from the flood to the tower of Babel. In both cases we have a new beginning and a divine blessing which is followed by a fall involving nakedness, seeing, covering and a curse, then we see the division of human beings into two camps: those who serve God and those who don’t, and finally we have a divine judgment. And then there is one more thing we haven’t talked about yet. In both panels we have a chosen line and at the end of that line there’s one character who receives special attention, is instructed by God himself and leads those who belong to him through the judgment to a new, unknown place that God provides. In the first panel this savior figure is Noah who leads his family to a new earth and in the second panel it’s Abram who will lead his family to the land God promised. Sound familiar in any way? What we’ve just described is basically the story of this world, the story of salvation in miniature format – there’s creation, there’s sin, there’s a final judgment and there are the many generations that pass in between where humanity is divided into those who follow God and those who don’t. But most importantly there’s a savior figure who appears who provides an escape from the divine judgment and brings people to a new earth, to a new land. Which means from the very beginning of the Bible there is a clear focus on Jesus and the theme of salvation. You can find it right here in Genesis 1-11 and everywhere else in this book. And one of the ways to see it is to pay attention to the design of the Bible, to the beauty of the text, not just when it comes to individual texts but also for longer sections.
