Lovers Lula (Laura Dern) and Sailor (Nicolas Cage) are separated after he is jailed for killing a man who attacked him with a knife. The assailant, Bobby Ray Lemon (Gregg Dandridge), was hired by Lula's mother, Marietta Fortune (Diane Ladd). Upon Sailor's release, Sailor and Lula finally decide to run away to California, breaking Sailor's parole. Marietta arranges for private detective Johnnie Farragut (Harry Dean Stanton) to find them and bring them back. But unbeknownst to Farragut, Marietta also hires gangster Marcello Santos (J.E. Freeman) to track them and kill Sailor. With little money left, Sailor heads for Big Tuna, Texas, where he contacts his old acquaintance, Perdita Durango (Isabella Rossellini). Angelo Badalamenti is an acclaimed and prolific composer who has written some of the most unique film scores of our time. He is widely known for his long-standing collaboration with the director David Lynch, which has produced a creative and inspired body of work. In this score he adds an aura of eeriness and spookiness and overall creepiness to the already creepy visuals and tone in all his movies. There’s an inherent dreamlike quality to his music, and it’s as central a piece in this movie as any of the other directorial flairs Lynch airs. It’s perfect, and it’s right at home in Wild at Heart. In this marvelous score nothing more memorable than the Dark Spanish Symphony.
