Virtual surround sound with soundbars exists and they work well. For a long time, pretty much every soundbar sacrificed sonic performance for a smaller, plug-and-play setup. Today many of today’s high-performance soundbars support the more-immersive Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround-sound formats. These two technologies add overhead and height effects. Many modern sound bars offer virtual surround sound technologies to simulate realistic 2D and 3D environments. Manufacturers achieve this by designing soundbars to mimic the configuration of a surround sound system. Early iterations of soundbar used the 2.1 system approach. Surround soundbars now come in configurations such as 3.1.2, 5.1, 5.1.2 and even the 5.2.4 configuration is getting common. How do they do this? It’s simple. They achieve this by adding more speakers especially for height effects, using DSP and algorithms, leveraging Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and even providing additional wireless speakers in some high-end variants. Most new surround soundbars have upwarding-firing drivers that reflect sound off ceilings and walls to create that coveted 3D effect.
