Amharic is the official working language of Ethiopia, an Afroasiatic language and one of the Ethiopian Semitic languages. It is spoken as a first language by the Amharas and as a lingua franca by most people in Ethiopia. Arabic, meanwhile, is a Central Semitic language and has official/national status Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Malta (Maltese Arabic), Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, SADR, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania (Zanzibar), Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Arabic is also the liturgical language of Islam and has had an influence on many different languages.
