The result is something that you can touch. Here are some examples: I'm gonna make a sandwich. Do you want one? On the weekend I made a big chocolate cake. Oh, that smells great! What are you making for dinner? So those are things you can touch. We can also use MAKE to talk about intangible objects, things you cannot touch, like a plan or a law or a decision. Like this: We need to make a decision about where we're going on vacation. The government needs to make new laws to help protect the environment. We use DO to talk about some kind of activity, some kind of action. For example: I like to do some exercise every day. She's going to do her homework when she gets home tonight. Wow, well done you did a great job. We often match do with indefinite pronouns such as nothing, something, anything, to talk about more general stuff. Did you do anything on the weekend? I did nothing all day today. Maybe we can do something fun on the weekend. Possibly one of the most common phrases using DO is: So what do you do? This phrase is understood to mean: What do you do for a living? What's your job? Okay, remember I said that DO and MAKE are really frustrating because there's no useful rule to help us decide which one to use? A lot of it is just about experience and remembering set phrases and set expressions. So, we've already been through some examples of how to use MAKE and DO. I'm going to give you five more really common ways that we use MAKE and DO every day. Here goes: Make the bed - make sure you make the bed before you go to school today. Make a mistake - don't worry, it's okay to make mistakes. Make an appointment - Remind me to make an appointment with the doctor today.
