Robocall

Watch Singtel’s short film “Robocall” to find out how scammers use Caller ID spoofing technology to fool unsuspecting victims into thinking they’re receiving legitimate local calls from a “customer service officer”, and dupe them into handing over data like credit card details and one-time passwords. Robotic calls use automatic dialers to deliver pre-recorded voice messages over the phone. Though not made by a ‘live’ person, these overseas calls are similar to the ones used in impersonation scams —they may come from what appears to be a local number with the ‘+65’ prefix and may also pose as Singtel staff. These are spam calls that seek to confirm that your number is in use, or to trick you into quickly giving out personal information such as your NRIC/FIN, bank account and credit card numbers. How to protect yourself from robotic calls scams • Be wary of calls from numbers with a ‘+’ prefix. These may be masked or spoofed overseas numbers. • Hang up as soon as you realise it’s an unsolicited call. • Never provide sensitive details such as your NRIC/FIN, bank, and credit card numbers. • Block suspicious numbers on your mobile device manually or download ScamShield, a mobile app that blocks unsolicited messages and calls. Developed by National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) and Singapore Police Force (SPF), the app is currently only available on iOS. ‘Robocall’ is the second in a series of short films in Singtel’s anti-scam campaign, ‘Jaga your data!’. By serving up scam recognition lessons with a dose of humour, we hope to encourage everyone to be more vigilant, and protect themselves and their families from falling prey to scams.
