2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Review | Two Days Driving The Best 3-Row EV SUV

The 2026 Ioniq 9 is a big deal for Hyundai, and a big deal for families looking for a big 3-row EV that's less expensive than a Model X, Gravity, or R1S yet delivers over 300 miles of range, a big 3rd row and a cargo area that can hold, well, actual cargo. Don't let the wagon-like profile fool you, the Ioniq 9 is that EV. Although the rear end doesn't drop as dramatically as the Tesla Model X, the relative "egg shape" or "sport wagon" profile is essential in order to get the highway efficiency that Hyundai was after and that's the key to the claimed 335 miles of range in the RWD model. In the USA, we won't get the ultra low 0.259 because we'll get side mirrors instead of cameras, but it should still be low. Now... It's not as low as the Lucid Gravity, but that has a smaller 3rd row and a much lower roofline. The peculiar angle for me is from the back where I get the most "Volvo wagon" vibes. 0-60? 4.7 seconds in the model we were testing which was 2/10ths faster than Hyundai's claimed 4.9 for the "Performance AWD" model. The slowest 9 will 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and the regular AWD model splits the difference at 6.2. All models share the same 110.3 kWh battery pack which will get a 10-80% charge in 24 minutes and over 100 miles in just 10 minutes. Powering every model is a 215 HP rear motor and your choice of no front motor, a 94 HP front motor, or a 215 HP front motor for 429 total ponies in the "Performance AWD" model. So it's quick, how about the rest? The suspension is fairly well balanced. The rear suspension especially seems better tuned than the EV9 which feels less settled on broken pavement. The ride quality was on the firm side of things for a Korean market vehicle so I suspect this is the same suspension tune we'll get. Over potholes and speed bumps body motion was well controlled. Bigger bumps and larger suspension motions were transmitted into the cabin, but not in an unusually harsh way. The long wheelbase does make some parking lot maneuvers trickier than in a Palisade which cuts a circle 3-feet smaller, but in suburban America, this is unlikely to be an issue. The cabin proved quiet and the steering was as as isolated as anything with electric power steering. Grip levels were surprisingly high, thanks to wide tires, and Hyundai has programmed the symmetrical motor setup to favor the back motor when possible. Efficiency? That’s what we’re all here to talk about. The model we were driving had 285/45R21 tires on it, it was 33 degrees fahrenheit outside, and we averaged 2.85 miles per kWh which translates to 313 miles of range. That’s not bad given the terrain, temperature, and highway miles we were driving, although it’s worth noting that speed limits in Korea are quite low. There were brief stretches of road with 68 MPH limits, but most of the time we were driving with the cruise control set to 62, like people living in fear of the ever-pervasive speed cameras. And we were indeed afraid. At 75 MPH, my guess is you’d be around 280 miles of range. Join this channel to get access to perks!
