Country Walking: Pewsey, via Oare, Wiltshire. 20/3/25

Another very decent 10 miles from Country Walking Magazine. This one undertaken on a delightful, late March afternoon on the North Wessex Downs/Vale of Pewsey. The warm weather brought out some of the first summer migrants and the spring flowers were well underway. The walker is soon out of the village, via the Alfred Trail, passing over an infant River Avon and then alongside the Kennet and Avon canal. Thereafter, it's a slow ascent to some lofty views from the White Horse Trail and the Mid-Wilts Way. Lunch is taken at a conveniently located seat on Huish Hill, just outside the village of Oare. There's a short section of woodland walking, through Gopher Wood, which will be good for Bluebells and Ramsons shortly, prior to a slow descent back to the Kennet and Avon Canal. A lovely, varied walk that had good surfaces underfoot today, though there's clear evidence of this being different after rain. Recommended! N.B. The deer was a Roe Deer, given away by the white rump, and the walker did parts of this walk, from Devizes, back in 2010.
