Mid of Abd El Jalil leaving news conference STORYLINE: The head of Libya's opposition movement thanked the international community for their support in recognising the legitimacy of the National Transitional Council (NTC) on Saturday. At a contact group meeting in Istanbul, more than 30 nations, including the United States, formally acknowledged Libya's main opposition group as the country's legitimate government. Friday's decision potentially frees up (b) billions of dollars in cash that the rebels urgently need. "We all know and appreciate the value of the recognition, which will be political and financial support to this revolution," said NTC head Mostafa Abd El Jalil told a news conference on Saturday. Libya's civil war has fallen into a stalemate since the mass uprising seeking to oust ruler Moammar Gadhafi broke out in mid-February. Rebels have set up an interim administration in the eastern city of Benghazi and seized control of the port city of Misrata and much of the western Nafusa mountain range. Gadhafi controls the rest from his stronghold in the capital Tripoli. Diplomatic recognition of Gadhafi's foes means the U.S. will soon be able to fund the opposition with some of the more than 30 (b) billion US dollars in Gahdafi-regime assets that are frozen in American banks.
