Fjords are long, narrow, and deep inlets of the sea that are surrounded by steep cliffs or slopes. They are formed by the erosion of glaciers that carved out U-shaped valleys in the landscape. Fjords are mostly found in regions with high latitudes, such as Norway.They are found mainly in Norway, but also in other countries such as Chile, New Zealand, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, Sweden and Russia. They are home to diverse marine life and offer scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The deepening of fjords is caused by the weight of the glaciers that pushed down the earth’s crust and scraped away the rocks. When the glaciers melted, the sea level rose and filled the valleys with water.The mouth of the fjords often has a shallow sill or threshold of rock that limits the exchange of water and creates strong currents and rapids. Norway is famous for fjords. It has a long coastline of approximately 29,000 km (18,000 mi) with nearly 1,200 fjords.Sognefjord in Norway is the longest fjord, stretching to about 200 km.The depth of Norway’s Hardangerfjord is measured at 800 m below sea level.
