Zoey (the cat on the harness) was introduced to Bodhi (cat on shelf against wall) too fast. She began charging after him, chasing him under couches and beds and fighting with him basically the moment she noticed him. She was especially reactive if she noticed him staring toward her. Here we are using reward marker training (like, clicker training, but I'm making the click sound with my mouth), target training and a harness to help them both form new associations. One issue with Bohdi was how insecure he was. He wouldn't come out from under the bed after the first few fights. We added some shelving along the wall for him to be out in the space but still feel protected. These sessions allow him to observe Zoey in the same space with some security and confidence, which decreases his urge to flee (which prevents her chasing). And allows time to practice capturing new behavior from Zoey. Both of these cats are now coexisting peacefully (with a dog brother too!) in the same home. Kudos to Zoey and Bodhi's mom for spending the time, patience and effort on them that they needed.
