Sensation of obstruction of the throat leading to breathing difficulty can be due to various causes. The most common among children would be tonsillitis wherein there would be an enlargement of the tonsils and some children can give rise to obstruction as well as swallowing. These are children who tend to snore or have breathing difficulties while sleeping. In adults it can be because of the same tonsillar enlargement or even enlargement of the base of the tongue which is known as the lingual tonsil rarely though. You can have infections leading to swellings of the throat as a result of which they can be difficulty in swallowing and breathing. One of the sinister of the lot would be epiglottitis where in there is a swelling of the little tongue like structure of the throat which is behind the back of the tongue. This can swell up and cause acute respiratory embarrassment sometimes leading to alarming circumstances.
