The 5 Canons of Rhetoric

This video illustrates the "5 Canons of Rhetoric" by Marcus Cicero in chronological order as below: 1. Invention 2. Arrangement 3. Style 4. Memory 5. Delivery Act 1 Scene 1 (Invention I) It relates to the incident that whenever our teacher asks questions, some of us may tend to shy away from answering it. Thus, the process of invention cannot happen here as there was no questions asked since there was no attempt of inventing an argument. Act 1 Scene 2 (Invention II) Again, if the teacher asks questions and we reciprocated it actively, the outcome will be different. One is to say to have been a critical thinker when he/she uses her cognitive ability to identify a problem which thus, contribute in the process of invention where an issue is actually being "created". Act 2 Scene 1 (Arrangement) The idea of "arrangement" in the 5 canons of rhetoric is as the same as walking down from the staircase for instance. Whenever you are trying to persuade people, you should always arrange your speech or writings accordingly with the right flow. If you jumble up your points whenever it comes popping into your mind, you are actually putting yourself in the risk of "falling down from the staircase" as a result of not taking things step by step. Act 3 Scene 1 & Scene 2 (Style) The scenario given here is that both doctors are entrusted to convey to the family regarding the news of the death of the husband and to get the permission from the family to donate the deceased's heart to people in need. The message is the same, but both the doctors used different fashion to convey it. Therefore, style plays an important factor in wrapping up the message as a way of how it was being presented to the others. Act 4 Scene 1 & Scene 2 (Memory) It is clear that a good persuader does not need to refer to notes or scripts all the time while delivering speeches. Besides remembering the facts of the arguments, famous quotes, poem or proverbs may come in handy to enhance one's speech. It also shows the reliability of the persuader due to the impression of being knowledgeable and professionalism. Act 5 Scene 1 & Scene 2 (Delivery) Last but not least, when we are delivering our speeches, we should avoid mumbling in our own words as it indicates the lack of confidence in oneself. A good persuader makes their point precise, loud and clear which would greatly help in attracting the audience attention and understanding.
