APOPO is a non-profit, non-government organization aimed at clearing out land mines from war ravaged countries. And they do so by using HeroRATs - specially trained rats who sniff out land mines. For more videos every week, subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/threestarvaga... Also, join the Three Star Vagabond Facebook group to discuss upcoming videos: / threestarvagabond In this video I visit the APOPO Visitor Center in Sieam Reap, Cambodia to learn more about APOPO's operations, and to see the mine sniffing rats in action. APOPO's main training center is in Tanzania, but the rats are then shipped out to many countries - one of which is Cambodia. And the rats have already helped clear out 20 million square kilometers of land in Cambodia. I also interview the staff at APOPO to get a further insight into the training of the rats, as well as more information about APOPO in general. And, of course, when you visit the APOPO center, you also get to pet the rats. I hope you like rats, because these little critters are absolutely adorable. It's not all fun and games, though. HeroRATs are quite the little mercenaries, and they work for food. They have a less intimate connection with their handlers than, for example, dogs - but they're quicker than both dogs and humans at finding abandoned land mines. They're not perfect, though. Thick vegetation is a problem for these rats, and many farming areas are also unsuitable for rats. Primarily because they ignore the land mines and eat all the produce instead... #apopo #herorats #landmines
