It was named by Deva by the Romans who built a huge fortress here to establish their presence and stake their dominance on the surrounding area, not long after the invasion in AD43. As part of their defences, they built walls around the fort, creating a walled city. This is not unprecedented, but quite unusual for the Romans, who would only resort to this in the face of considerable resistance to their rule. The Normans extended and improved the walls after building Chester Castle in 1070 soon after the Norman Conquest and they were further enhanced from the medieval period, though sections of the Roman wall still form part of the walls today. The city walls are the oldest, longest and most complete in Britain, forming a complete circuit of the old city, with only one or two interruptions. A tour of the walls encompasses most of the attractions Chester has to offer and provides a different perspective of the city compared to ground level. The tower structures and bridges form good landmarks as the walls pass the Shropshire Union Canal, Chester Cathedral, The Eastgate Clock Tower, which is built on the walls and is the most prominent feature in the town centre, the remains of the Roman fort and Amphitheatre, the Roman Garden, the River Dee, Chester Castle, Chester Racecourse and the Water Tower, all of which can be seen in the video. The walls are approx 2 miles in length, so only take a couple of hours to navigate at a leisurely pace for most people, but also give the option to stop off and visit the attractions to make a day of it. I was fortunate to get a beautiful Spring day for this video, but unfortunately could not get drone footage at the amphitheatre, which I thought would show it off best, due to a school trip taking place at the time. I hope you enjoy the video.
