Tools and tactics to use in Backlog Refinements with Scrum teams

Backlog refinements are important for agile teams... especially those using the scrum framework. This is where they learn how to work together, build team dynamics, negotiate, agree/disagree, get organized, and think critically about the future of their product. In this video, I show the tools I routinely use in agile team backlog refinement sessions, as well as highlight some things to watch out for while in a team refinement. These are all things observed and learned through my experience as a scrum master. The tools I show: 1. Jira - while it’s not necessary to use Jira specifically, it’s important to facilitate refinements in whatever project management tool you’re using. The important part is to ensure all the details are captured into 1 single repository that everyone on the team has access to. It’s also crucial that epics and user stories are formatted clearly and include contextual details, why doing this will bring value, metrics for success, any assets or visuals, acceptance criteria, out of scope, questions/answers, and dependencies. 2. Agile Poker - this is a Jira plugin that can streamline a mature team’s backlog refinement by giving them the ability to run asynchronous refinements. POs (and possibly other team members) will prepare user stories according to the team’s definition of ready and then assign them directly to an async session in Jira. The team developers are then instructed to review and estimate them ahead of the refinement session. By the time the team comes together to discuss, everyone is knowledgeable about the topics. 3. Pointingpoker.com - Simple and intuitive to use, no sign in or registration necessary. Good for new - mature teams.
