The last active farmer in a remote village tries to hold out against a property developer. The opening scenes of M Manikandan's Kadaisi Vivasayi play out in the most unassuming manner. We see an old farmer, Maayaandi (Nallandi, who is, sadly, no more), waking up and going about his daily chores. He lets out the hen from the coop, feeds the bulls and then takes them to his farm. We are then introduced to the other people who make up this village... a man (Muniswaran) who is turned down by the woman he loves because she's heard that his family is a crazy one; a bald man (Kalimuthu) who is so desperate to grow his hair back; a 22-year-old dwarf woman who hopes to get married; Ramayya (Vijay Sethupathi), a Murugan devotee, who is believed to have gone crazy following the death of his loved one and is now a vagabond; a police constable (Kaalaipandiyan) who constantly gets mistaken for an EB man or an auto driver... And slowly, a semblance of plot appears. Following a lightning strike the fells an ancient tree in the village, the villagers decide to conduct a festival to their local deity. To make an offering, they need rice grown in the village. And the only person in the whole place who is still farming happens to be Maayaandi. He agrees to grow paddy, but then, in the most bizarre fashion, finds himself sentenced to prison for no fault of his. Can this farmer, who has all these years lived a sustainable lifestyle, survive life behind bars?
