HAREWOOD HOUSE HISTORIC HOUSE TOUR home of the Lascelles family, designed by John Carr & Robert Adam

Harewood House that we see today was completed in 1771, but the first known owners of Harewood were three Saxon Chieftains. With their loyalty to the Norman invaders in doubt, their land was confiscated and given to a Norman nobleman, whose descendants were therefore the first Lords of the Manor of Harewood. The oldest building at Harewood is Harewood Castle, founded by the De Lisle family in the 12th century. It was passed it to Sir William de Aldeburgh, following his marriage to Elizabeth de Lisle heiress of Harewood, who granted a licence to crenellate in 1366. When second son Baron Aldeburgh died without issue, the castle transferred to the Redmayne and Ryther families, into which his two daughters had married and the castle was occupied by the same families for more than 200 years. Next door the Gawthorpe estate, first owned by the Gascoigne family, who built a 13th century manor house Gawthorpe Hall, sold the Gawthorpe estate in 1580 to the Wentworth family. In 1600 the Harewood estate was sold to the next door neighbour Sir William Wentworth from the Ryther family to clear their debts. In 1641 the Wentworth family fortune was in serious decline when Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford was executed by Charles I for treason. In 1657 his son sold the Harewood Castle and Gawthorpe Hall and both the attached estates to Sir John Cutler. It was Cutler's relative and the executor of his will, John Boulter, who sold the Harewood and Gawthorpe estates to the Lascelles family in 1738. Gawthorpe Hall was demolished and and Harewood House was completed in 1771. Edwin Lascelles wanted the very best architect, designer, landscape gardener, furniture maker, ornamental plasterers and painters. Harewood House became a showcase for the best of contemporary design. Edwin, Carr, Adam, Chippendale and Brown were the creators of Harewood House and grounds and are largely what you see today. Edwin was succeeded by his cousin Edward who became the first Earl of Harewood. In 1922 Henry, 6th Earl of Harewood married Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, who was an enthusiastic collector of beautiful pieces of jade, fans, Faberge and watercolours. The collections of Princess Mary and the 6th Earl are an important part of Harewood's story, a family tradition that continues to this present day.
