Three days in Mineral King | Sequoia National Park

Mineral King is a paradise hidden in the depths of the Sequoia National Park. This is one of my favorite places to hike and climb mountains. Hundreds of miles of well maintained trails and great peaks to bag is what you will find when you head up here! Silver was discovered in Mineral King in the 1870's and the dreadful winding road from Three Rivers was built soon after. Silver City and Cabin Cove are two little communities that still contain historical mining cabins. There are old mill sites and adits that can be found if you look closely when trekking in Mineral King. Did you know that Walt Disney Productions almost developed a massive ski resort in Mineral King?? Yes, that's right. Thankfully, it never happened and this beautiful area is preserved from what could have been an awful tourist nightmare! Mineral King was annexed into the Sequoia National Park in 1978, preventing Walt Disney never to build in the area. For more historical information on Mineral King, make sure to stop by The Mineral King Preservation Society in Three Rivers. Check out their website: www.mineralking.org This 3 day hiking trip included 10 summits and over 45 miles. Peaks #60 thru #69. I stayed at the Silver City Resort, which I highly recommend. I hiked out of Sawtooth Trailhead and Franklin Lakes Trailhead. Both of these trail heads sit around 7,100 feet in elevation making the elevation to these peaks very generous (over 5,000 feet in elevation gain). I highly recommend climbing Sawtooth Peak (Day 1) and the Farewell Gap to Eagle Lake Loop traverse (Day 3). You will find yourself in a hikers paradise! The views will blow you away! Directions to Mineral King: From Visalia, California - take east bound Hwy 198 to Three Rivers. Turn right onto Mineral King Road from Hwy 198. This road is over 25 miles long and takes about 90 minutes to get to Mineral King due to its width and the winding nature of the road.
