Maya and the Doctrine of Karma - The Upanishads Part 3 - PODCAST - AUDIO ONLY | On Paradise Earth

The Upanishads describe the imperfect and delusory trappings of the material world in terms of a dream-like experience called Maya: a Sanskrit word in the Vedas that refers to the causative powers of a Creator-spirit in the natural world. The continual yet escapable flow of creatures into and out of the realms of existence is defined doctrinally as samsara ('a flowing through’). However, Brahmanic doctrine admits to only one, single Soul that participates in samsara as the Earth's sole samsarin (‘one possessed of flow’). That would be the Universal soul, Atman (one soul), which assumes and sheds bodily attachments in as it participates in life cycles. Most of these incarnate forms is unaware of their true essence, that being the Soul of Brahman, because the Creator's magical powers of maya have placed us in the dream-like and delusory trance of samsara. Adepts in the soma sacrifice would come to realize, however, a mind-set that revealed their true (sat) identity as the sole transcendental spirit of the cosmos. And attainment of this ultimate goal is known variously as ananda (bliss), Brahman, nirvana and moksha (liberation). All of these terms and concepts are entirely consonant, of course, with the oft-quoted prehistoric refrain of the Rg- and Yajur Vedas: “We have drunk the soma, we have become immortal.”
