(10 Jan 2019) ALESSANDRO NIVOLA OPENS UP ON STARRING IN 'SOPRANOS' PREQUEL MOVIE, 'THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK' Now that "The Sopranos" prequel has become a reality, the film's star Alessandro Nivola confirmed that a young Tony Soprano will be a part of "The Many Saints of Newark," though he had good reason to be careful with how much he shared about the feature film. "I guess I got to be kind of discreet about it, so David Chase doesn't kill me," Nivola told the Associated Press on the red carpet for the 20th anniversary celebration of the groundbreaking HBO series Wednesday night (9 JANUARY 2019) in New York. "I'm playing Dickie Moltisanti, who is the central character in the movie, and he is Christopher Moltisanti's dad," Nivola said. Though the elder Moltisanti never appeared in the series, he is often mentioned as part of Christopher's backstory. Gunned down when Christopher was young, Tony Soprano, played by the late James Gandolfini, becomes a father figure to him throughout most of the series. Nivola alluded that the film will explore how that Dickie played a similar role in Tony's life before the birth of his own son. "Tony (Soprano) will be a character in the film, and as was mentioned throughout the 'Sopranos' series, my character was an important person in his life, and it examines that relationship as well," Nivola said. The film starts in 1967 with the backdrop of the race riots that were going on in Newark, New Jersey, and according to Nivola that racial tension "a big part of the story." Nivola joked that there's "some irony" to his name in relation to the film's title. Moltisani translates to "many saints" in Italian. While the title is ironic, Nivola also cited "weird coincidences" that told him this role was meant for him. "The first being that my next-door neighbor, who's separated from me by a brick wall, is Tim Van Patten, who directed half of the episodes," he said. Then there was a bizarre family connection that his brother brought to his attention. "Our grandfather was a Sardinian sculptor named Constantino Nivola, and he told me that he was watching episode seven or four of season two, and there's an episode where they go back to Naples and in the back of this shot with Gandolfini in the foreground, he sees one of my grandfather's sculptures just over his shoulder. And they were shooting in a spot where they had done a - brought a travelling show of my grandfather's work, and it was the backdrop for this whole scene of this episode, so it was meant to be or something," he said. "Sopranos" showrunner David Chase told the Associated Press in 2014 that he was exploring the prequel idea, but has only recently confirmed it. Chase will produce the film, and has written the script with "Sopranos" writer Lawrence Konner. Alan Taylor will direct. He has previously helmed episodes of "The Sopranos," "Mad Men," and "Game of Thrones." "The Many Saints of Newark" begins shooting in April. "So I got a little time to hang out in social clubs before then," Nivola joked.
