For the past 2 years of travelling around Australia, the caravan brake controller on our vehicle has randomly disconnected. Today I discovered the problem! The power to the brake controller is protected by a 30A auto resetting circuit breaker. These circuit breakers actually just contain a simple thermostat to detect how much current is flowing through them - the more current flowing through them, the hotter they get until the thermostat trips and it will disconnect at the preset temperature / current until it cools down. The moral of the story is to understand how different components work and make sure the environment you put them in isn't going to cause unforeseen problems!
