NC500 E8: A spot of early morning hill walking near Tongue in the Scottish Highlands from the village of Tongue to the ruins of Castle Varrich - a historic castle overlooking the Kyle of Tongue. ➡️ See more from my NC500 Road Trip here → http://bit.ly/mwt_NC500 After spending the night in Tongue I got up early to take a walk up to Castle Varrich before checking out of my hotel and heading west. The trail was well signposted from the High Street and within a few moments I was on my way down to the river. The pathway to Castle Varrich is a 1.5 mile round trip that will take approximately 50 minutes, the last section heading up to the castle itself is fairly steep but nothing too bad. All in all it was an enjoyable walk in the morning sunshine. The exact origins of the castle are unknown but it is understood that the chief of Clan Mackay was there over 500 years ago, and some historians believe the site dates back well over 1,000 years.
