Fast Fashion & The Environment: Making the Connection

The term “fast fashion” refers to an approach to clothing design, creation, and marketing that emphasizes getting the newest trends from catwalks to consumers as quickly – and cheaply – as possible. But the environmental toll is high. Experts estimate that the fast fashion industry is responsible for nearly 10 percent of annual global emissions. It is the second-largest consumer of the world’s water supply. And that’s to say nothing of the dyes and other chemicals used during the production of those clothes. This event is designed to help you make the connection between air pollution (and other environmental degradation) and fast fashion. You will also learn more about what everyday steps you can take to cut down on textile-related pollution. GASP's Rachel Filippini is joined by local green fashion enthusiast, teacher, and seamstress Leah Shuck with Sustainable Stitches; Tereneh Idia with Idia'Dega; and Aurora Sharrard with the Office of Sustainability at the University of Pittsburgh.
