Can a deviated septum be cured with medications? - Dr. Anita Krishnan

A deviated nasal septum is nothing but a bent or a overgrown middle partition of the nose. A deviated nasal septum is a structural defect. About 60 – 70 % of the population has some amount of deviations. All deviations are not symptomatic. Maybe only 30 5 of the people with the deviation will have symptoms. Now when the nose, the middle bone is bent to one side grossly, there will be more space on the other side .So the brain will confuse it for being abnormal. The brain will think that the less air entering space or the narrow space is normal and send signals to the other tissues of the nose like turbinates to sell up. This is called compensatory swell up. That is when you start feeling the nose block even though one side of your nose is patent. Now there are medications to reduce the swelling of the tissues due to allergy and other reasons. So this can give you a temporary feeling of an open nose, but a deviated nasal septum cannot be cured by medicines. It is a structural defect. It has to be corrected with a surgery called septoplasty.
