Post-Tonsillectomy Pain Control: what to take, how to manage it, why does it hurt

What should I take for pain after I get my tonsils out? Summary: Take pain medications on a scheduled basis in the first few days. Don't wait for the pain to kick in. It is much easier to stay ahead of the pain rather than try and catch up once it is already out of control. Most doctors recommend alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and prescribe a narcotic like morphine for breakthrough pain or as a rescue medication. If you are prescribed a narcotic combination drug like norco, vicodin, percocet, lortab; these already contain Tylenol so do not take additional Tylenol. If you are taking narcotics, they can cause nausea, constipation, lightheadedness, and other side effects. Be careful, don't drive. Also consider taking a stool softener. Not all doctors are ok with ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin). Medical Disclaimer: All comments are generalizations and intended to be for educational purposes only.
