Farmers across Karnataka protest against anti-farm bills | Ground Report

Farmers from over 23 districts in Karnataka will be arriving in Bengaluru on Wednesday to express solidarity with the farmers in Delhi and to oppose the Amendment to the Land Reform Act of 1961, cleared by the Karnataka Council on Tuesday. The protesting farmers are mostly involved in the cultivation of sugarcane, maize, coffee, raw silk, tomato and onions. The farmers will reach Bengaluru by train at 11AM and take out a rally from City Railway Station and lay siege to Vidhana Soudha, where the winter session of the assembly is underway. The main demand of the farmers is that the Karnataka government must withdraw the Land Reforms Amendment Bill, passed in the upper house on Tuesday. The bill allows non-agriculturalists to buy farm land in the state and provides for removal of restriction on purchasing agricultural land and on its use for agricultural purposes only. Farmers have been opposing the amendments to the bill ever since it was mooted. They are of the opinion that more and more corporates will enter the agriculture sector and purchase huge amounts of land for their benefit.
