Lewis Allan (Lou) Reed (New York, March 2, 1942 – Southampton (New York), October 27, 2013 was an American musician and singer. Together with John Cale, he was the face of the influential band The Velvet Underground. As a guitarist he was also very influential; he made extensive use of distortion and alternative tunings. He was one of the first to sing about subjects such as sadomasochism (Venus in Furs), transvestism (Sister Ray) and transsexuality (Lady Godiva's Operation). In 1970, Reed left The Velvet Underground and started a solo career. In 1972 he had his biggest single hit: Walk on the Wild Side, which was later released on the album Transformer (produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson). He also had another success with Perfect Day. Since then, Reed has regularly released new albums. His 'most notorious' solo album is without a doubt Metal Machine Music from 1975: A double album filled with loops of guitar feedback and at the time labeled by many as one of the worst albums in the history of rock music. In retrospect, however, guitarists Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth call it one of the most daring albums of all time. According to Lou Reed it was Andy Warhol who inspired the song. He said in a Rolling Stone interview in 1989: “Why don’t you write a song called ‘Vicious. And I said, 'What kind of vicious?’ Oh, you know, vicious like I hit you with a flower.‘ And I wrote it down literally.” Welcome to the official Pinkpop Archive YouTube channel!
