Objects and Data Collections in Early Scientific Disciplines - Anja-Silvia Goeing - May 23, 2013

This talk is part of the symposium, "Data Visualization from Data to Discovery: Art Center + Caltech + JPL", May 23, 2013 | Beckman Auditorium | Caltech, Pasadena, CA, USA | http://www.hi.jpl.nasa.gov/datavis Taxonomic Show-And-Tell: Objects and Data Collections in Early Scientific Disciplines This talk is about the transfer of early modern object collections into data collections that were then visualized in 2D and 3D. The purpose of these visualizations was mainly to foster and facilitate further research and to circulate knowledge among broad audiences. The 18th and 19th centuries were important for questions of data visualization, because scientific disciplines were just beginning to formulate methodological routines. The topic provides a historical perspective to contemporary questions that arise with processing data collections, on a much smaller scale. Anja-Silvia Goeing is Privatdozent at the University of Zurich and Lecturer at Caltech. She is researching the use of collections and technical instruments in early modern European schools, academies and universities (1400 to 1800). These include libraries, text compilations, encyclopaedias, and object collections of different formats, among them cabinets of curiosities. In this moment, Anja is editing a book together with Princeton Professor Anthony T. Grafton and Zurich Professor Paul Michel on text and object collections, covering the period from the middle ages to the mid-20th century. It's title is "Collectors' Knowledge: What is Kept - what is discarded?". The editors have created a website, https://www.uzh.ch/ds/wiki/ssl-dir/Ke..., for this enterprise. About the symposium:  Nearly every scientific and engineering endeavor faces a fundamental challenge to see and extract insights from data. Effective Data Science and Visualization can lead to new discoveries. Together, we at Caltech, NASA JPL, and Art Center represent the same convergence of science, engineering and design that drives new Big Data-powered discovery. On May 23, 2013, industry leaders visited Pasadena for a series of talks to inspire, unite and challenge our community to re-examine our practices, and our perspectives. Guests included: Fernanda Viégas & Martin Wattenberg | Co-leaders, Google Data Visualization Group Jer Thorp | Co-founder, The Office for Creative Research Golan Levin | Director, Carnegie Mellon Studio for Creative Inquiry Eric Rodenbeck | Founder, Stamen Design Jeff Heer | Assistant Professor, Stanford University Anja-Silvia Goeing | Privatdozent, University of Zurich and Lecturer of History and History of Science, Caltech See http://www.hi.jpl.nasa.gov/datavis for more information.  Produced in association with Caltech Academic Media Technologies. © 2013 California Institute of Technology.
